Friends of the Earth spokesman Damien Lawson says there should not be any Government funding for clean coal technology.

"It's a bit like big tobacco. When they were faced with the reality of what the tobacco industry was doing to people they came out with light cigarettes," he said.

"That's in a sense what clean coal is, a desperate attempt by the coal industry to stave off the inevitable which is that the coal industry must be phased out."
