CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy has dropped a proposed $416 million clean coal power plant in southern West Virginia.

DOE spokesman Joe Culver says the project wasn’t likely to succeed. The agency pulled the plug on Western Greenbrier Co-Generation’s 98-megawatt plant in June, about two months after approving up to $107.5 million in financing. DOE also spent more than $8 million on planning.

Western Greenbrier’s Wayne Brown says the project’s future now looks grim. The company has struggled to solidify financing and missed a $100,000 loan payment last November. The project also faced a court challenge by an environmental group that objected to its state permits. Western Greenbrier planned to fuel the plant with coal waste.
