I see that Barack Obama is calling for a million new electric vehicles on the road in seven years. While I applaud that goal, where is the electricity going to come from to power those hybrids that will make our air cleaner? Our energy needs are already projected to grow by 23 percent in 2020, and this move will add to that burden.
Part of the answer is renewable. Another part of the answer is American coal. Some people will say we can't use coal because it isn't clean. But just as a hybrid car isn't your grandfather's Oldsmobile, today's coal use is more advanced.
With clean-coal technology, coal-fueled power plants built today are at least 80 percent cleaner than older plants, and advanced technology will get us to near emissions-free coal burning in the foreseeable future.
Plug-in hybrids powered by electricity made from clean American coal - it's another step on the path to making America energy secure.
