SOUTH PARK, ALLEGHENY COUNTY - Presidential hopeful John McCain was in the Western part of Pennsylvania on this Wednesday talking about coal production and energy independence. While Senator McCain used this campaign appearance to talk about a number of significant political issues, the main focus of the visit was on the importance of developing clean coal technology right in this part of the state.
The soon to be Republican Nominee took a tour of the Consol Energy Research Lab in South Park, which is in Allegheny County in Western Pennsylvania. The Senator says a great deal of work is being done at this and other similar centers to advance the cause of clean coal. According to MccCain, coal can and should be playing a growing role in this nation's energy production. McCain says burning coal cleanly remains a big challenge. But with a clear need for energy independence, McCain says it only makes sense to put more support into developing the coal fired generating plants of the future.
During his visit to Western Pennsylvania, McCain called his push for clean coal and energy independence a key part in the effort to turn around the american economy. From Pennsylvania, McCain was off to a town hall meeting in Ohio where the same themes could be stressed.
