Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine, a guide to outdoor recreation and eco-tourism throughout the Blue Ridge/Appalachian region, is read by nearly a quarter-million nature enthusiasts. Started in 1995, BRO has moved from a loosely-organized print monthly to a dynamic, user-friendly website with a print companion available in over 900 locations throughout the Mountain Southeast.

The July issue of BRO features the magazine’s annual Greenies, environmental awards given out in categories ranging from the Greenest Town (the Star City and Salem are both runners-up to the winner Fayetteville, W.Va.) to the Greenest Regional Band (Trees on Fire , its unique organica genre of music, and its newest passion for exposing the ills of mountain-top removal). Three of the feature stories in this month’s issue tackle the problems associated with coal and mountain-top removal.
