WAVERLY, KY -- A Kentucky coal company was cited by state officials Saturday for alleged violations from a coal slurry spill into two Union County creeks, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader in its Sunday edition.
The Kentucky Division of Mine Reclamation and Enforcement said a ruptured slurry line caused the spill of so-called "black water" on Friday.
The spill, at the junction of Casey Creek and Highway 141 near the community of Waverly, was first discovered by a state worker, reports the Herald-Leader.
Heritage Coal Company closed off the line Friday night, officials said. The company has confined the spill in Casey and Highland Creeks. The slurry did not reach the Ohio River, nor has it affected any water intakes, the newspaper reports.
The company has been ordered to remove the slurry from the streams.
The Kentucky Division of Water has notified the company of pending citations, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader.
