Renews Call for Massive Investments in Carbon Capture Technologiess, Clean Coal ResearchWashington, DC (HNN) -– Senator Jay Rockefeller vowed to fight to make sure that West Virginia clean coal is part of any national solution to global climate change. On Monday, June 2, Rockefeller, D-WV, voted to begin debate on legislation that aims to develop an approach to address both global climate change and responsible energy policy.
Rockefeller’s statement on beginning debate on the bill follows:
“The simple answer is that I wanted to begin debate on the bill. I voted to start the debate on climate change and energy policy because they are incredibly important to future generations, and we need balanced and sensible solutions. As the Senate debates this bill don’t anyone think for one moment that I’m not going to fight for my state of West Virginia.
“This bill does fall short in a number of areas including support for clean coal research and the development of carbon capture and sequestration technologies.
“If we’re truly serious about doing something to address climate change, then we have to find a solution to carbon emissions. What we really need right away is a full-court press to research and develop effective carbon capture and sequestration technologies. We need massive-scale government-funded, but not government run, research into technology solutions that will help us deal with climate change.
“Because the bottom line is that there are some priorities that we absolutely must do, that are critical to our survival and that we need to get started on right away. It may be time to take funding for a few critical investments – climate change, infrastructure, health care or the war on terror – away from the normal Washington process even if it means taking on more debt.”
