The debate about using coal - an abundant U.S. energy resource (check out U.S. Dept. of Energy statistics here) - to produce gasoline has mainly centered on whether the process can actually reduce prices at the pump, and whether something can be done about coal's carbon emissions.

FutureCoalFuels.org is a site with many features about coal-to-liquids technology. Keep in mind this is an industry site, so of course some folks will question the information, but it does provide a better understanding of the CTL process.

Something  that pisses me off about articles like this one - they always turn a blind eye to the extraction of coal which in the short term is much more devastating than any other aspect. - denny
