Marsh Fork Elementary – Update

Posted on May 1, 2010 | By | 1 Comment

I have written a few times about Marsh Fork Elementary and the battle for a new school, see here and here. Thanks in a large part to my good friend Ed Wiley and his Pennies of Promise campaign the battle for a new safer school has been won.

Victory: New School For Marsh Fork Elementary

I’ve read some articles referring to the new school as the Ed Wiley Elementary School. I don’t think they could come up with a more fitting name. Ed should be remembered for his persistence, determination and dedication in the pursuit of a safer learning environment for the kids.

My hat’s off to everyone involved in the campaign for not giving up and for a job well done.

Our remnants of wilderness will yield bigger values to the nation’s character and health than they will to its pocketbook, and to destroy them will be to admit that the latter are the only values that interest us. – Aldo Leopold

I recently did a debate against MTR in a Nature and American Values college course. Before I researched information for the debate, I did not know much about the topic. As an Environmental Planning major, I feel that this topic is of great importance and I am glad my class expanded my knowledge on MTR. The Marsh Fork Elementary issue sparked my interest in health issues and the potential harm that coal sludge impoundments and other processes could cause on the population. American coal companies are altering the values of the average citizen, creating a more accepting opinion of MTR. However, this is a terrible transition for the US energy economy. I also feel that more regulations reducing permits given out for MTR sites would be more progressive and make more environmental conscience decisions. In addition, after viewing a documentary about Wise County, Virginia done by a classmate of mine, we cannot ignore all of the health issues from MTR. In conclusion, I think that the US and state regulations should take a more progressive approach for utilizing alternative technologies. Rather than spending more money on MTR and endangering the health of our population.
