Justification for MTR & Windmills In NC

First off, there is no justification for mountaintop removal coal mining… at all, period.
I feel like I have been down this road so many times I could navigate it in the dark. A recent article on another blog, I don’t think is worth linking to, brought up the justification issue in the form of a guest post from an ICG (International Coal Group) official. Pretty much it says the same things we have been hearing and the things you would expect to hear from the coal industry, mountaintop removal coal mining, for numerous reasons, is the only way to get the thin seams of coal near the top.
I go back to some questions I have asked here many times.
Coal industry reps will say we have about 250 years of coal reserves in the state. Nothing to worry about, we can burn coal forever.
My questions again…
IF we have 250 years of coal reserves in the state, why is it necessary to retrieve the thin seams near the top?
IF the 250 years of coal reserves is the thin seams, which it must be since we are hellbent on blowing up the mountains to get them, do you really plan to blow up the mountains for 250 more years?!? Seriously, is that your plan? I think you better wake up soon.

Another article recently was talking about North Carolina wanting to ban windmills on it’s ridges. Isn’t a lot of North Carolina power generation derived from coal? So basically, it is ok to blow up our mountains so you can keep your lights on.
You wanna know what I think? I think 99.9% of the battle against mountaintop removal coal mining is a battle against selfishness, greed, and ignorance in every form.
Our remnants of wilderness will yield bigger values to the nation’s character and health than they will to its pocketbook, and to destroy them will be to admit that the latter are the only values that interest us. – Aldo Leopold
