Spotlight On Prosperity – Whitesville, WV

Today I’m going to take you through Whitesville, WV. Whitesville is surrounded/owned by Massey Energy. The mayor of Whitesville, Freddie Harless, is also a Massey Energy employee. He’s one of those sorry excuses for human beings I’ve been talking about as is the entire city council.

Below is a Google map of the Whitesville area. The map depicts an area of about 3 miles.

You can see that Whitesville is literally surrounded/infested by Massey Energy. Which means, theoretically, it is one of the richest areas in the state in terms of coal revenue.
Welcome to Whitesville, West Virginia.

The pool is obviously no longer used. This part is hearsay – I was told that Massey Energy was instrumental in getting this pool closed. I don’t know that to be a fact but it makes perfect since with the town mayor being a Massey employee.
This pool is located sidewalk and horizontal parking distance from the main thoroughfare through Whitesville. It is also located about 100 yards from the school. The road past the pool, library, and school is the main access road for coal trucks and various other support equipment for the mine sites in the area. During the school months there is an obvious speed limit enforced in the school zone during school hours. I’m quite sure the speed restriction hampers Massey’s operations.
There is nothing Massey can do about the school restriction but in the summer months, when this pool was open, there was also a speed restriction because of it’s close proximity to the highway and the amount of kids that would be here if they could. My thoughts – Massey was instrumental in closing this pool to lift speed restrictions in the area during summer months.
Cause and Effect
I’ve touched a little on cause and effect on the Backwoods blog before but I want to try to show you a different scenario here.
In the town of Whitesville reside quite a few low income families. I know a few families personally with children living there. In the summer months there is nothing for kids to do in the Whitesville area. The pool at one end of town is shutdown and the ballfield at the other end is on Massey Energy property. Which means to go there is to trespass.

So how does the town of Whitesville deal with bored kids? They hire two police officers to arrest them when the kids inevitably turn to drugs and alcohol from sheer boredom. Kids used to be able to go to the mountains to alleviate some of the boredom. Can’t do that anymore, especially in the Whitesville area, lest you be trespassing. Why don’t they move? Why don’t you?
Cause and Effect – take away the residents community activities and watch that community deteriorate into lawlessness and watch drug/alcohol abuse run rampant. Believe me when I tell you – more police officers is not the answer.
The residents can start to clean up their town by firing the entire city council after the mayor of course, and then putting the brakes on Massey’s affairs in the town of Whitesville.
How many people out there would allow a stranger to come into your home and dictate the future of your family? I would say it is a safe bet that not many would, especially if you could see as plain as day where that future took your family. Is there a difference here that I am missing?
My suggestion – stop playing the dumbass hillbilly.
Reclaim Whitesville, West Virginia!!!

Adding – The following article/opinion made me sick to my stomach and the fact West Virginia media covers it with such enthusiasm is disgusting to put it mildly.
Thank goodness for the 4th Circuit
One question – has the whole friggin’ country gone insane?
NEWSFLASH!! When crooks like Bill Raney are happy… they are getting away with something. Do I really need to tell you what they (West Virginia Coal Association) are getting away with?
Our remnants of wilderness will yield bigger values to the nation’s character and health than they will to its pocketbook, and to destroy them will be to admit that the latter are the only values that interest us. – Aldo Leopold
