Customers Pay Twice

If you are a customer of TVA and this doesn’t piss you off – for crying out loud start standing up for yourself.

TVA Customers To Pay For Ash Spill Clean Up

KINGSTON, Tenn. – The costs could reach the hundreds of millions for the Kingston ash spill, and that’s still not counting the cost of the cleanup, legal damages and methods needed to change how the TVA disposes of the ash in the future.

The estimates have been coming in at hundreds of millions of dollars and TVA’s chairman Bill Sansom confirmed that the costs will be passed down to the customers.

The Tennessee Valley Authority has more than 200 workers out in the field trying to clean up after a dike broke on Dec. 22 at the Kingston Fossil Plant in Roane County.

More than 200 families have been affected, and some families have already joined a pending environmental lawsuit against the TVA. A number of those families affected will be at a Senate hearing Thursday in Washington where the spill will be discussed.

The TVA and Roane County Emergency Management were also expected to speak at the Senate hearing.

Right now, there is no federal regulation as to how to properly dispose of coal ash. Environmental groups said what happened in Kingston should lead to major federal regulation.

“We’re not talking about the fact the disposal of this coal ash would have put any of those utilities out of business.  We’re talking about the fact they would have made a little less money,” said Don Safer, with the Tennessee Environmental Council.

For now, there has been no final cost for all of the cleanup and damages done in Roane County. The U.S. Senate will hear from both sides of the issue later Thursday.  http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/story.asp?S=9637721

I think it is a damn shame when customers have to pay for industry screwups. TVA should have to pay every penny directly out of their pocket. That is one reason the energy sector is so out of control. They screw up – the customers pay for it. Sometimes in more ways than one.
