Welcome to Stop MTR

What is mountaintop removal (MTR)? In the most basic of definitions – it is a process of surface mining where the tops of mountains are literally removed to expose the seam of coal underneath. Mountaintop Removal Mining – Wikipedia
This process of mining coal is destroying communities, our waterways, hardwood forests, and the Appalachian Mountains. Organizations from all over the Southeast United States are fighting for Appalachia. This blog is going to be adding to that list. If you came here via the Backwoods Drifter blog then you already know my position. For those that don’t know – I am not against traditional coal mining done properly, safely, and with regard to the surrounding communities and the environment. I am not an opponent of coal. However, I am strongly opposed to mountaintop removal.
I started this blog because the subject of mountaintop removal was quickly devouring the BackWoods Drifter blog. I voice my opinions there – here you will be more educated than having to listen to me rant.
In the works -
- I’m going to be getting some contributing authors to this blog. I already have one on board and I am very anxious to hear what they have to tell you. I hope more come forward once awareness starts to spread. If you are aware of the impacts of MTR and would like to contribute to this educational site – by all means leave a comment or contact me. (rvnx11 at gmail dot com)
- I’m going to be having the opportunity to visit some impact areas and speak with residents. I will bring you their stories and photos.
- Also, I may have the opportunity to do a flyover of the mountaintop removal sites in Southern West Virginia. I go nowhere without my trusty camera so there should be some good first hand photos involved. Education is the key.

With a global shift occurring right now towards a more focused look at the environment and global warming – mountaintop removal should be a key discussion.
At Stop MTR we are bringing mountaintop removal into an arena reserved for discussion – the blogosphere.

If you would be interested in learning more right now – visit the websites in the link list under Fighting For Appalachia.
The link list Blogging For Appalachia is exactly what it says. These are links to blogs that either do or have discussed mountaintop removal. If you would like to be added to this list – write a post concerning some aspect of the impacts of MTR and I will add a link to your post as well.
Alternately – If you would like to show your support by linking to this blog – again e-mail me or leave a comment and I will add your site to a Stop MTR supporter blogroll.

This blog is a work in progress. Welcome!!!
Our remnants of wilderness will yield bigger values to the nation’s character and health than they will to its pocketbook, and to destroy them will be to admit that the latter are the only values that interest us. – Aldo Leopold

Denny,
I’ll definitely be working on this over the weekend. Look for a write up on The Rasch Outdoor Chronicles this Tuesday.
